Ozempic Face

Dr. Metin Demir  ·  6 min read

"Ozempic face" is the popular term for the loss of facial volume, hollowing and sagging that can appear after the rapid, significant weight loss achieved with GLP-1 receptor agonist medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide and similar). As your body reaches its target weight, the face can look more tired and aged than expected — the good news is that this appearance can largely be corrected without surgery.

What Is "Ozempic Face" and Why Does It Happen?

A youthful, full-looking face depends on the harmonious interplay of the subcutaneous fat compartments, the collagen–elastin network and the underlying bone support. With rapid weight loss these fat compartments shrink quickly. The skin, however, cannot retract at the same pace; the result is hollow cheeks, deepened temples, under-eye hollows, more prominent nasolabial folds and a loosening jawline and neck. This is not unique to GLP-1 drugs — it follows any form of rapid slimming — but the term became popular as these medications spread.

How pronounced the effect is depends on the amount of weight lost, the speed of the loss, age, skin quality and genetic predisposition. It is more noticeable in older patients and skin that has already begun to lose collagen.

Treatment Approach: Addressing Volume and Skin Quality Together

The right approach is not a single procedure but a personalised combination. The goal is never to "inflate" the face but to restore lost volume to the correct anatomical planes, in the right proportions, for a refreshed, natural expression.

Dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid): The first step for early, visible results. Volume loss in the cheekbones, temples, under-eye (tear-trough) area and jawline is replaced with fillers of the appropriate density. Results are immediate and quickly correct the "deflated" appearance.

Collagen stimulators (biostimulators): Products based on calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid differ from fillers in that they prompt the skin to produce its own collagen, providing durable fullness and firming over the medium to long term. They complement fillers when volume loss is extensive.

Thread lifting: Lifts sagging tissue without surgery; it is particularly helpful for laxity of the jawline and mid-face. When volume loss is marked, it is planned together with fillers or biostimulators.

Skin quality and mesotherapy: Stabilised hyaluronic acid (skin boosters) and mesotherapy improve skin elasticity, glow and texture, supporting an overall sense of freshness.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Anyone who notices marked facial volume loss and a tired expression during or after GLP-1 treatment can be assessed. The ideal timing is when weight has largely stabilised — because ongoing weight change affects how long results last. Skin-quality treatments can also be planned during active weight loss. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, active skin infection and known allergy to filler ingredients are exclusion criteria.

The Process and Expectations

Every plan begins with a detailed facial analysis: how much volume has been lost in which area, skin elasticity and proportions are evaluated. In most cases treatment is staged over several sessions — volume first (filler/biostimulator), then thread lifting and skin-quality treatments if needed. Mild swelling and rarely bruising may follow; return to daily life is usually quick. For natural-looking results, a gradual "less but correct" approach is essential.
